Rep Cates pushes for longer sentences for violent felons caught with guns

Representative Kathleen Cates and her colleagues are promoting legislation to reduce gun violence: “House lawmakers have approved a bill increasing prison sentences for violent felons with firearms. The bill proposes nine years for a first offense and 18 years for a second, aligning closely with federal law.

. . . Another bill aims to prohibit young adults with a felony-level gun crime on their juvenile record from owning guns for 10 years. This would not affect individuals 28 and older.

“So if you committed the crime at 15, you couldn’t own or possess a gun until you are 25,” said state Rep. Kathleen Cates.”
