For the first time in New Mexico history, registered Independents—voters who have “Declined to State (DTS)” as a party affiliation—can vote in this year’s primary election without changing their voter registration. Last year, Senate Bill 16 was enacted, allowing independent and unaffiliated voters to cast ballots in primary elections for the first time in New Mexico history.
As State Representative for House District 44, I proudly voted to open up New Mexico’s primary elections, because I believe every voter should have a voice in deciding who represents them in the Roundhouse.
Early voting for the June 2nd primary election is already under way. Make your plan to get out to vote today!
Key primary election dates:
- May 5 – early voting at county clerk offices
- May 16 – May 30 – expanded early voting locations
- June 2 – Election Day!
Check your voter registration here before you go. To find early voting or election day polling sites near you, visit the website of the Sandoval county clerk or the Bernalillo county clerk.
Please note: Voters registered with a minor party (i.e. Green Party, Libertarian) can still participate in the June 2nd primary election. Just head down to any polling location and use the Same Day Registration (SDR) option to update your voter registration temporarily to the major party in whose primary you would like to vote. After that, if you want to update your voter registration to reflect your previous affiliation, you can go to NMvote.org whenever it’s convenient for you!
